Supporting Your Child’s Vision

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision issues worldwide, and it’s on the rise, especially in children. It often begins in early childhood and can progress into adulthood, affecting both vision and long-term eye health.

At Cambridge Eye Care, we offer personalized myopia control strategies to help slow its progression and protect your vision for the future. Whether you’re managing your own sight or your child’s, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Contact us to book an eye exam today and discover how our team can help you or your child see more clearly, now and in the years to come.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eyeball becomes too long or the cornea too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina. This makes distant objects appear blurry while close-up vision stays clear.

Common signs of myopia can include:

  • Difficulty focusing in school or during sports
  • Squinting to see distant objects
  • Complaints of blurry distance vision
  • Frequent headaches or eye strain

Why Myopia Control Matters

Myopia often begins in childhood and can worsen as kids grow. If it progresses too far, it can lead to high myopia, which increases the risk of serious eye conditions such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, early cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration.

Taking steps to control myopia early can help reduce the need for stronger prescriptions and protect your child’s long-term vision.

The Link Between Vision & Learning

Strong vision plays a vital role in your child’s ability to succeed in school. Reading, writing, using digital devices, and participating in classroom activities all rely on clear and comfortable sight. When vision is blurry or strained, it can lead to headaches, poor concentration, and frustration. In some cases, these signs may even be mistaken for learning or behavioural challenges.

Myopia can make it harder for children to keep up with their classmates, especially if it goes undiagnosed or unmanaged. That is why early eye exams and timely intervention are so important.

Our Myopia Control Technology

We offer in-depth diagnostics to accurately assess and track your child’s myopia through the Topcon MYAH system, a multi-function device that measures axial length, keratometry, and meibography, along with other tools:

  • Combination approaches: We often combine therapies for better control and long-term success.
  • Axial length measurement: Tracks eye growth over time for a precise picture of progression.
  • Corneal topography: Maps the surface of the eye to guide ortho-k lens fitting.

Our Myopia Management Options

Myopia often develops during childhood. Research estimates that around 30% of children in Canada have some degree of myopia, which can affect their ability to learn and play. Because of this, the CAO recommends that children have an eye exam every year to help manage their vision and the health of their eyes.

Research has also found that early and prolonged use of digital devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets can raise the risk of developing myopia.

We offer a variety of different myopia control options, including combination treatments.

MiSight 1 day contact lenses are child-friendly, daily disposable soft contact lenses that can help manage myopia. These lenses use ActivControl Technology to help correct and slow myopia progression in children aged 8–12 at the start of their treatment.

Through ActivControl Technology, MiSight lenses focus light in front of the retina, helping slow myopia progression.

MiSight lenses are designed to be comfortable and easy to use, making them an option for children who may not be suitable candidates for other myopia control treatments, such as ortho-k.

Abiliti 1-Day contact lenses are specifically designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children while providing clear, comfortable vision for all their favourite activities.

Abiliti lenses are safe, convenient, and ideal for active kids. They offer an easy and effective way to manage myopia while supporting long-term eye health.

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses that are worn overnight to gently reshape the front surface of the eye (the cornea). While your child sleeps, the lenses temporarily correct their vision so they can enjoy clear sight throughout the day without needing glasses or daytime contacts.

Ortho-k is a popular choice for active children and teens who may not want to wear glasses or contacts during school, sports, or other daily activities. These custom-fitted lenses are also proven to slow myopia progression by at least 50%.

Specialized glasses such as Stellest and MiYOSMART are designed to do more than correct blurry distance vision. These lenses use modern technology to manage how light enters the eye and where it focuses, helping to reduce strain and slow the progression of myopia.

They look and feel like regular glasses, making them a comfortable and convenient option for kids who are not comfortable with contact lenses.

Low-dose atropine eye drops are a safe and well-researched option for slowing the progression of myopia in children. These drops work by gently relaxing the eye’s focusing mechanism, which helps limit the elongation of the eyeball that causes nearsightedness.

This treatment is especially useful for younger children who are not yet ready for contact lenses or ortho-k.

Why Early Management Is Important

Studies show that early and consistent myopia management can make a significant difference in your child’s long-term vision and eye health. Lifestyle factors, like screen time and outdoor activity levels, also play a role, and our optometrists will work with your family to support healthy habits alongside clinical treatment.

Myopia doesn’t have to define your child’s future. At Cambridge Eye Care, we offer modern testing, professional guidance, and compassionate care. Book a comprehensive myopia control consultation today to give your child the visual freedom they deserve.
